Before the Second Worldwar C.Plath sold and serviced Anschütz gyros in Hamburg and Anschütz was the gyrocompass supplier to the German Navy.
So it is not surprising that during war time the sextant and magnetic compass manufacturer C.Plath also made gyrocompass repeaters for Anschütz gyros.
The compass is a part out of a system... the name in the book is Wandtochter (Wall daughter)
Gyrocompasses were very important on submarines because a magnetic compass will not function correctly inside a submarine..
